Liver Cirrhosis

Overview

Cirrhosis is the final stage of liver scarring/ fibrosis that occurs as a result of repeated liver damage. This condition is common amongst chronic alcoholics and those with chronic hepatitis.

Symptoms

Initial symptoms include

  • Weakness and fatigue
  • Jaundice
  • Loss of appetite
  • Loss of weight
  • Reddening of palms
  • Swelling in legs & feet
  • Fluid accumulation in abdomen
  • Disorientation
  • Blood vomiting, blood in stools
  • Web like blood vessels appearance

Causes

The primary causes of liver cirrhosis include

  • Chronic alcoholism
  • Chronic hepatitis (any viral strain)
  • Damage/ destruction of bile ducts
  • Fatty liver
  • Genetic digestive disorder
  • Chronic infections
  • Medications

There may be more associated causes that lead to liver cirrhosis.

Risks

  • Excessive alcohol consumption
  • Poor hygiene
  • Obesity & overweight
  • Lack of dietary fibers

Prevention

  • Balanced diet
  • Vaccination against Hepatitis
  • Healthy body weight
  • Limit alcohol intake

Diagnosis

  • Blood tests
  • Liver biopsy
  • Fibroscan
  • CT scan
  • Ultrasound imaging or
  • MRI

Treatment

  • Lifestyle modification
  • Abstain from alcohol
  • Medications
  • Dietary changes (Low sodium diet)
  • Surgery (in severe cases): Liver transplantation
